First Image Icons was created to promote Contemporary Christian Sacred Art from various Orthodox Traditions with an emphasis on the Neo-Coptic or Contemporary Coptic style, as practiced in Egypt. First Image developed out of a MA research project undertaken by Monica Rene, to photograph and catalogue the large collection of icons in the church of St Mercurios Abu Sifain, Old Cairo, with a view to publishing a book. Part of this rare material was produced as postcards in 1989 and became the nucleus around which grew First Image Icons.
The original firstimageicons.com web site was launched in 2000 and featured mainly replicas of Coptic icons, ancient and contemporary. Our new site does not have a shopping basket for ready made products but instead has an E-mail address for commissioning hand painted icons directly from the iconographer or to ask any questions concerning the sacred art of iconography.
We offer rare courses led by masters from divers artistic traditions with an emphasis on icon painting.
